Press-release: Awards-winning Team Debuts Eco-Play for Young Audiences at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
A triumph of whimsical physical theatre, Fraxi Queen of the Forest is Asylon Theatre’s new show for young audiences aged 8+ written by Scotland New Playwrights Award recipient, Jack Dickson. Complete with photosynthesis and hungry caterpillars, Druidism and bağlamas, birdsong and ash-dieback, this vibrant play will stimulate in children a revitalized interest in sustainability as well as an appreciation for different cultures. Fraxi Queen of the Forest has also been shortlisted for Creative Carbon Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Sustainable Practice Award.
Showing in the Royal Botanic Garden, Fraxi Queen of the Forest teaches us just how central trees are to the environment and to people around the world. Fraxi is an Ash tree who protects and nourishes her fellow creatures by providing them air, shelter, and a place to call their home. Through an ancient folk ritual a human child called Woody also becomes connected to the tree. As he grows up he comes to love Fraxi as a friend and as a guardian. Tragedy strikes when an airborne disease, Chalara, reaches the forest, and to everyone’s dismay Fraxi is soon infected. Woody, who has grown up to be a tree surgeon, knows that to save the other ash trees in the forest he must cut down his old friend. The Queen must die to preserve the woods around her, but her memory will live on in the music that her wooden trunk is later shaped to make. Everything changes in the forest but nothing ever truly dies.
